The Talent Behind the Reputation

A nation is built out of taxes that its citizenry pays, it’s a summation of the morality and honesty of the people that reside in it. Indirect tax has been a big pillar of how a nation evolves financially; India has been no different.

When we at NJ Jain started practicing Service Tax in 2004, it was a relatively new law, incidentally it was one of the shortest tax laws in India as well. With its evolution complexities grew, a simple tax law soon became one of the most complex ones. We started practicing Excise and VAT laws around 2012 when whispers surrounding GST started to gain momentum. Finally, GST was introduced in July 2017 with a grand promise to change the way India worked.

GST has witnessed astronomical growth statistically; the number of GST registrants has almost tripled in 6 years since its introduction; similarly, GST collection rose from 7.19 lac cr in 2017-18 to 18.10 Lac Cr in 2022-23, more than 2.5 times in 6 years.

GST and demonetization have proven to be catalysts in identical growth of Direct taxes. In FY 2016-17 India roughly had 4.98 cr Income tax return filers who paid 7.18 lac crores of Income and Corporate taxes. GST was introduced in July 2017, and with it, Income tax return filers rose to 8.23 cr in FY 2019-20, a staggering growth of 65% in just 3 years. Tax collections rose to 14.09 lac cr in FY 2021-22, which is near doubling of the collection in mere 5 years.

India is experiencing a Transition like never before, GST is proving to be a pivot of this all around Transition. We at NJ Jain have witnessed this grand evolution of the Indian Tax System and have been helping businesses and corporates navigate its complexities so that our clients can do what they do best, business, without worrying about indirect tax hassles.
